Bio
“Do not ask who I am and do not ask me to remain the same.” M. Foucault.
Rafael Escardó (1991) was born in Lima, Peru, where he lived until age 24. During this period of development, he studied Business as well as received training on painting and contemporary dance. He moved to the UK in 2015 attending the BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths University. Today he lives and keeps his studio practice in East London.
To appreciate Escardó’s practice, it is essential to understand his believe on identity being fluid, and that we surround our bodies with elements that compose the projection of this self. Contrasting the quotidian with the surreal through gesture, materiality, the potential of wearability or even bio-metamorphosis; the artist offers an opportunity for us to examine our own identity dynamics and inter-relationality. Finally, he has developed specialty skills in textiles, sculpture and choreography; however his practice is completely multidisciplinary, resourcing frequently to photography, video. making, drawing and printmaking.
