Bio
Rafael Escardó (1991) was born and raised in Lima until age 24. During this period of development, he studied Business as well as received training on painting and contemporary dance. At age 20, having accepted publicly his sexual identity as a gay cis man, he understands some of the challenges members of a minority in a traditional catholic mindset environment such as Peru, face. On 2015, he moved to London, UK, to pursuit his career as visual artist at Goldsmiths University of London on the BA Fine Art course. Now a days, Escardó lives and keeps his studio practice in East London.
At the core level, Escardó’s practice is essentially informed by the body, and it’s function as vehicle of identity. Crossmatching elements from multiple fields such as the physical, social, cultural, and philosophical; Escardó considers his practice to be a series of social experiments that play with the dynamics of post-structural fluidity on the contemporary plane. Always starting ideas with a flexible plan on the intersection of criticality and intuition, Escardó looks for the most suitable medium to experiment, making his practice exceptionally eclectic. Having that said, he has developed technical specialties on textiles, sculpture and choreography; frequently resourcing to photography, video, drawing and printmaking for research and project synergy.
